SOUTH EUGENE BANDS 2010-2011
Welcome to South Eugene High School Band Classes Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, And Jazz Ensemble
We are looking forward to working with each one of you this year. Together we accomplish our goals of making music and enjoying ourselves in the process. In order to do this, we need a few group agreements.
Respect each other and our performance area
- Be prompt to class and be punctual, on time is LATE!
- Attend class daily with music, instrument and pencil
- Have a positive attitude and work ethic
- Practice daily (even for a short time) to improve your musical skills
General Information for Band Students 2010-11
- Keep your instrument in good working condition.
- Have necessary supplies to be successful
- Reeds-strength, types
- Brass, mute’s -cup, straight, jazz mutes slides all work.

- You will have your own music folder. Be responsible for it. Bring to class EVERY DAY. Ask if you need a replacement folder.
- Sign up for an instrument locker-bring a combination lock from home. Share the big lockers with a friend we do not have enough lockers.
- The room will be open for a short time after school to pick up instruments for home practice.
- Performances are mandatory, part of your grade and a commitment to the ensemble. If you must miss one I need a 2-WEEK WRITTEN NOTICE.
Grading Policy
The following will help determine your grade.
- Prompt attendance. Unexcused absences and tardiness will severely affect your grade.
- Be on time and ready to participate.
- Complete class assignments.
- Written tests and playing tests.
- Bring pencil to class.
- NO talking during warm up, tuning or rehearsal.
We are all busy. To earn an “A” grade for the SEMESTER, you must do at least ONE of the following:
- Take private lessons (12-15 per term)
- Participation (or send in an audition recording) in other performance groups such as:
- Youth Symphony
- Junior Orchestra
- All State, All Northwest Band, Willamette Valley Honor Band
- WIBC
- Prepare and send in audition tape to WIBC, All state/Northwest
- The school musical(s) orchestra
- Solo/ensemble festival
- **Play in the football/basketball pep band**
In addition, you will also need to attend two CLASSICAL concerts at venues such as the Hult Center, LCC, U of O, etc. You need permission ahead of time to count a different concert. Middle school or high school concerts will not count. Some South concerts may count (musicals count). You may also watch one rehearsal and then attend the concert; this would be especially good for the U of O and LCC groups.
We will suggest excellent concerts throughout the year. (Others? Problems? See me.)
