WEEK THREE 9/27 - 10/01

MONDAY:
- Quiz on Ch. 1 & 2
- Discussion regarding the reading
- Character list (page 2 of interactive notebook)
- Written plot summary (page 6 of interactive notebook)
- Proverbs (page 5 of interactive notebook)
HOMEWORK:  Read Ch. 3 & 4 and write a brief plot summary for the reading on page 6 of your I.N.

TUESDAY:
- Quiz on Ch. 3 & 4
- Discussion regarding the style of the writing, as well as the excessive number of characters (esp. minor characters)
- Update character list
- Proverbs: activity on page 4 of your interactive notebook. Select one proverb and go to the place in the text where this proverb appears. Reread this section of text. Then, write a paragraph that explains the literal and metaphorical meaning of the proverb AND explain what that proverb means in the context in which it appears in the novel.
HOMEWORK: Finish paragraph if class time ran out; Read Ch. 5, 6 & 7 and write a brief plot summary.

WEDNESDAY
-Quiz on Ch. 5 - 7
- Today we got into groups of four and each group wrote two haiku. One haiku was for Ikemefuna, who was slain in last night's reading. The other haiku was for Okonkwo, who killed him.
- These haiku were transferred to posters and decorated and hung on the back wall.
HOMEWORK: Read Ch. 8 & 9

THURSDAY
- Today there was a sub. No reading quiz.
- We finished our group haiku. Afterward, you could choose your activity. The options were: decorate the cover of your interactive notebook, read tonight's reading or study for the Ibo vocabulary and character quiz.
HOMEWORK: Read Ch. 10 & 11; Study for Ibo vocab/character quiz

FRIDAY
- Reading quiz on Ch. 10 & 11
- Ibo vocab and character quiz
- Creation myth assignments returned and discussed.
HOMEWORK: Read Ch. 12 & 13

WEEK TWO (9/20 - 9/24)

MONDAY:
- Today we did our first graded Socratic Seminar on the Mayan and Nigerian creation myths. 

- If you were absent, please see me for a makeup assignment a.s.a.p.

HOMEWORK: None, unless you were absent or were not prepared for the seminar. The makeup assignment is due by Wednesday 9/22.

TUESDAY:
- The creation myth writing assignment was discussed. You will be writing your own creation myth and turning it in on Friday 9/24.

- We took extensive notes on Colonialism and Imperialism. 

HOMEWORK: Creation myth assignment due on Friday 9/24

WEDNESDAY:
- We finished our notes on Colonialism (Powerpoint)
- We talked about Nigeria's history

HOMEWORK: Creation myth assignment due on Friday 9/24; please bring your student ID on Friday

THURSDAY:
- We took notes on a handout about Tribal Ibo Nigerian values and customs

HOMEWORK: Creation myth due tomorrow; bring your student ID! 
 

FRIDAY:
- We checked out Chinua Achebe's "Things Fall Apart"
- We finished our notes on yesterday's worksheet on Tribal Ibo values/customs
- We discussed and took notes on proverbs
- We made an interactive notebook by stapling 9 sheets of lined paper together (and we discussed how this interactive notebook will be used)

WEEK ONE 9/13 - 9/17

Here's what we did in class this week.
MONDAY 9/13
- Warm up involving names
- Debriefed Friday's discussion about the inherent "problems" of World Literature.
- Talked about reading strategies
HOMEWORK: Read the Babylonian creation myth and practice reading strategies. The goal for this reading is to try to infer as much as possible about the Babylonian culture from this piece of literature.

TUESDAY 9/14:
-We discussed the Babylonian creation myth and listed as many inferences as possible about Babylonian culture and every day life as we could, supporting our answers with the text.
- We discussed in depth the purpose of mankind according to this myth and man's relationship to the gods and what that implies.
- We talked about Socratic Seminars
HOMEWORK: Read the Indian and Greek creation myth and come up with two good questions. Your questions could be regarding either myth, or you could have one question for each myth.

WEDNESDAY 9/15
- We shared the questions that were written for homework and talked about how confident we were formulating "good" questions.
- We went over the various stages of the Maha Yuga and talked about the possible implications of this worldview.
- We got a handout on Costa's Levels of Questioning and discussed this thoroughly
- We talked about how tomorrow's Socratic Seminar will work and as a class established ground rules to ensure a smooth discussion.
HOMEWORK: Read the Chinese and Japanese creation myths and formulate 3 higher level thinking questions in preparation for Thursday's Socratic Seminar.

THURSDAY 9/16

- First Socratic Seminar of the year.

- If you were absent, there is a makeup assignment within 48 hours of the Socratic Seminar.
