Restaurant Elvira (English)

Well hello all!

We have been here in Mazatlan for 10 days now! Forced to wait for an important package that held bike parts, we managed to keep ouselves busy. We started off on the right foot by moving to a small Island just a stones throw from Mazatlan, The Island of Stones. We made our camp at the first restaurant on the beach, Restaurant Elvira's. She is a beautifully warm 64 year old who runs the small restaurant with the help of her children and granchildren. Her son Che took us fishing, her daughter Margarita helped us paint and her granchildren kept us company. Speaking of painting...We asked them if we could paint the front of their restaurant, and in exchange they let us stay for free! We painted it blue and then added some flair. Check out the pics!

We met some great Americans and Canadians and made tons of friends when we fed some of the stray beach dogs. We joked that our tent was an animal hospital because we had goiter, skinny and eye infection Jumbo always at our side. We saw a significant  change in their health since we've been there. So, we've got our ties to this little Island. However, our package has arrived so we must be on our way. Goodbye Mazatlan hello open road!

Restaurant Elvira! (Portuguese)

Bom, aqui estamos... no México!!!

Team Bleg Diary

Hello All! We have made it to La Paz. I would like to be able to say that it was hard, but we had a little help. Early on in the journey we realized our inability to carry enough water and food to last us in the long 3-5 day stretches it would take to cross the desert and mountains. Civilization in Baja can be sparse! Plus we were drinking 3 liters of water about every three hours! The sun is scorching hot and cactus shade is not very generous! For those reasons and the fact that somewhere in the beginning of the trip Greg strained his MCL, a ligament in his knee. We decided that for the sake of our well being it would be best to do the dangerous stretches by bus. So we biked and rode. For the record Baja by bus is much faster, and far less sweaty! We were ahead of schedule so we got to stop at a beautiful little beach call Playa Santispac where we went snorkeling and were marine predators feeding at night on a feast of scallops and clams caught by day. We also met three generous bachelors headed south, Kenny, Jimmy and Joel. They let us use their motorhome kitchen and shared there meals with us. Overall a heck of a goodtime with three perfect gentlemen! Then they gave us a ride over the mountains to La Paz. So here we are ready to join up with Juliana coming from Brazil. She will be meeting us on the 20th in Mazatlan. She was unable to get a visa to the U.S, so she is getting a late start. We are about to take on mainland Mexico so stay tuned because more exciting stories are sure to come!

SHSKI Bike Ride ~ Mission

Mapstarttoend

In October 2005, six people will be taking an epic bike ride. They will start in San Diego, California and end in San Jose, Costa Rica. The route will take them through some of the most beautiful Mayan ruins, ancient cities, and amazing forests. Most of all they will be experiencing strenuous physical challenges as well as language barriers.

The journey is meant as one of exploration and adventure. With the help of Rotary International, various cash donations and the technical support of SHSKI (Students Helping Street Kids International - http://www.helpthekids.org) they will be ambassadors bringing a message of good will to the world. "We hope to meet tons of people, and enjoy the raw exercise and submerged learning!" says Bliss Jensen one of the bike riders.

The riders are encouraging people to donate money to SHSKI. Quoting Greg Craig, one of the riders: "There are so many poor people in the world, but SHSKI is taking an active step by finding some of the poorest kids and helping them reverse their fate, and change their lives as well as their children's to come lives. Education is the answer and it will conquer. That's why we want to do this bike ride. To get out and meet people, learn about them and let them see how we are as Americans and how much we want to help."

Together these six riders will be full of stories and have some great photos. Share the excitement.
